Just a short journey from Galle, on Sri Lanka’s beautiful southern coast, lies Koggala Lake — a peaceful coastal lagoon where tropical nature, small islands and centuries-old traditions come together.
Covering approximately 7.27 square kilometres, Koggala Lake is one of the largest coastal lagoons in southern Sri Lanka. Surrounded by lush mangrove forests and traditional fishing villages, its calm waters are home to a rich variety of birds, fish, crabs and other wildlife.
Scattered across the lake are eight small islands, each with its own natural beauty, history and local stories.
Discover Cinnamon Island, where local families continue the traditional art of preparing world-famous Ceylon cinnamon. Visit Temple Island, home to a historic Buddhist temple, or simply enjoy the peaceful scenery of mangrove-lined waterways.
Along the way, watch for kingfishers diving for fish, sea eagles soaring above, monkeys leaping through the trees, and water monitors swimming quietly near the water's edge.
You may also see local fishermen gliding across the water in traditional outrigger canoes (oruwa), continuing age-old fishing traditions that have been part of the lake for generations.
Leave the busy coast behind, slow down and experience the quieter side of Sri Lanka.
